Despite being stretchered off the pitch playing for Brazil in Ireland in midweek, Gilberto has been passed fit for today's lunchtime clash at Stamford Bridge. Although Edu could deputise ably, the absence of Ray Parlour for a few weeks makes Gilberto's fitness important with the Champs League coming up. Freddie Ljungberg is due back from injury today, but we'll have to wait and see how he gets on. The combined absence of Ray, Freddie, and Gilberto would significantly diminish our midfield win terms of total work-rate.
Gael Clichy is looking pretty good, and capable in midfield too. If the 3 mentioned above had all been unavailable we might well have seen him on the left of midfield today. But it looks like he'll be needed in defence instead, since Ashley Cole's back injury from the England game has not got better.
Thierry Henry and Sol Campbell are both back having been rested for the midweek internationals, and Kanu is in the squad having returned from Africa. Aliadiere and Wiltord are still injured, and Martin Keown serves a one-match ban. Wiltord, incidently, is now expected to be returning to light training early in March. But will it be early enough for him to play for Arsenal again...?
Chelsea are missing keeper and occasional clown Carlo Cudicini and sneaky striker Hernan Crespo (whose temperature the official Chelsea site helpfully tell us in 39 degrees), as well as Damien Duff who's still not fit. But (like Sol) defender John Terry could be fit despite missing the England game. Manu Petit and Veron are long-term absentees. |
