Birmingham visit Highbury tomorrow lunchtime with a doubt hanging over leading scorer Mikael Forssell. The striker, on loan from Chelsea (none of whom's more illustrious strikers have scored moe
goals than him this season), had to pull out of the midweek Finland game with a knee injury.
Arsenal also have a couple of players in doubt from the midweek internationals. Lehmann and Ljungberg both pulled out of their games late. It's an interesting pairing because there has been speculation today that Arsenal are inviting bids for Freddie, and because Rami Shabaan has been quoted as saying he's been told he can expect to play before the end of the season (so that Wenger can have one last look at hime before deciding whether to keep him, presumably).
No definitive word as yet on Edu, beyond the fact that, soon after it happened, his eye injury on Wednesday was said not to be serious.
Cygan is still not back from his ankle injury, he's training but not with the ball. And Stuart Taylor is out for the rest of the season.
If Forssell doesn't make it, Stern John is expected to deputise. The Blues also have Martin Grainger (knee), central defender Darren Purse (ankle) and midfielder Darren Carter (hernia) out injured. Robbie Savage is expected to play despite a dodgy ankle, but David Dunn has been struggling with a hamstring problem and hasn't played since picking it up in the FA Cup defeat to Sunderland back in February. He is, however, back in the squad. Keeper Maik Taylor starts a 2 match ban.
One aspect of Wenger's team selection that's been getting some media attention is the race for medals. Players need to have featured in 10 matches in order to get a medal. Reyes and Kanu (not Clichy as previously stated) need just one more appearance (off the bench is enough), so it seems likely that they'll get their medals. Jeremie Aliadiere and Martin Keown, however, have 7 and 6 respectively. While it'd obviously be nice if Martin got a medal, I'm sure I'm not the only Arsenal fan thinking that tinkering with the side for this reason would not be worth it if it endangered the unbeaten run. Lets leave them on the bench for now, Arsene, and see what happens.
Great quote from Steve Bruce, "One of my mates in management, and I will not say who it is, but he said if you get a corner against Arsenal the best thing you can do is kick it straight out for a goal-kick so you can go and regroup..." |
