The big news ahead of Norwich City's visit to Highbury tomorrow is that Gilberto is finally back in action. After 6 months out with back trouble, the Brazilian returns at last to the starting line-up. Although at Arseweb we were already warming to him, I have to admit to being one of those whose only reached full appreciation of his talents when I saw what it was like without him. He may not be as flash as Cesc or as spectacular as Vieira, he may not get around the pitch quite as obviously as Flamini but he does get about. Both Thierry Henry and Arsene Wenger have been calling him "our Makelele" this week, and with good reason: Gilberto is solid. Let's hope the same can now be said for his spine.
Sadly, he won't be partnering Vieira who himself has returned from international duty with a bad back. It'll be interesting to see who he does partner. Pires is back from his flu, and with Ljungberg available on the right we may see Cesc brought back into the middle - his style should complement Gilberto's well. But I quite fancy seeing how Flamini works with him too.
Edu (knee) is also missing from midfield and Bergkamp (calf) from the attack. But Henry is available again and I fancy he'll partner Reyes, seeing as Wenger has been saying that the Spaniard is back to his best form.
In defence, Sol Campbell has finally recovered from his ankle injury but lacks match fitness, so with Senderos injured (thigh) we'll probably be using Toure and Cygan. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cole rested for Clichy, following the former's efforts for England over the last week (mind you, we saw hardly anything of him against Azerbaijan on Wednesday compared to the Northern Ireland game on Saturday).
Senderos and Vieira's injuries are minor and they should be back for the next game.
Norwich come with an almost complete squad. One notable absentee is David Bentley who, although having recovered from a 10 week knee injury, is an Arsenal player and so not allowed to feature against us. Matthias Svensson and Jim Brennan are doubtful having only just got over injury problems.
Norwich boss Nigel Worthington says they'll come to play their own game ie try to attack. It's probably their best bet since Norwich have the worst defensive record in the Premiership. If they can get the first goal and make the Gunners nervous then who knows. But really, this is a must-win job. Man Utd are at home to Blackburn Rovers though, so don't expect to see us regain second spot just yet. |
