On the Guardian site today there's an interview with Jason Crowe,
the young full back who recently left for Portsmouth.
He talks about how hard it is for young home-grown talent to make
it
when there are so many relatively cheap imports coming in.
One can sympathise, since in 12 months he went from seeing himself
as Lee Dixon's successor to third-in-line behind Vivas
and Luzhny. The name Stephen Hughes comes up,
naturally,
and also in this more general article on the same topic. But
Hughes is not such a great example as he's had his chances in
the
first team. More worrying is the departure of Michael Black, and
Crowe's contention that the likes of Michael's brother Tommy,
Paolo Vernazza, and recent England stars Greg Lincoln and Jermaine Pennant are unlikely to
stay beyond the end of their
current (short) contracts. |
