...well, by 0.2 of an average league placing, at least!
Today's Independent carries a fine statistical analysis of the relative
dominance of all English football teams in the 20th Century.
Although fans of other teams who have enjoyed recent spells
of success might feel affronted, it will come as no
surprise to Arsenal fans that the Gunners come out on
top, with an average final league position of 8.5 compared
to Liverpool's 8.7, followed by Everton (10.6) and upstarts
Manchester United (10.9).
The Indy's article focusses on the spells of success we have
enjoyed under our 3 great managers: Arsène Wenger
(a relative minnow so far), George Graham, and the
greatest of them all, the man who "arguably
surpasses even Bob Paisley and Matt Busby as the manager of the
century", Herbert Chapman.
To be fair, although it hurts, the analysis appears to be
based on domestic results only. I guess that factoring in
European success would raise Liverpool above the Arsenal.
But on the other hand, I suspect that including other
things like youth/reserve/ladies teams might swing it back
our way....?
