Officials from the players' union PFA are to write to Arsenal and Everton demanding an explanation as to why a foul-mouthed fan was allowed to enter the Highbury pitch during the 4-1 Premier League win last Saturday. The PFA are angry at what they view as a a major security risk, according to the Mirror. A spectator was allowed to bypass Arsenal stewards and confront Everton's Alex Nyarko last weekend. PFA chief Gordon Taylor fears that players can be injured in similar circumstances if security matters aren't dealt with. "The whole thing reminded me of the incident in tennis where the crazed fan ran on to the court and stabbed Monica Seles," Taylor said. "If it can happen in tennis, it can happen in football."
Nyarko decided to retire after the incident, which was described as 'racist'.
As an antidote to Taylor's ridiculous comments, which appear to put the blame at Arsenal's door, let's put things in perspective.
Stewards are not allowed onto the pitch except at the referee's
request. So where was the ref? Where were the police? Surely it
was primarily their responsibility to deal with the intruder,
but they left it to Tony Adams.
The most telling quote of Taylor's outburst was his comment on Eric Cantona. "...when Cantona reacted, as anyone would have done...". Yes Gordon, we all instinctively attack people with
karate-style drop kicks when they insult us. This is indeed
perfectly acceptable behaviour in this country and people would never ever get nicked for it.
