Apparently HM Elizabeth the Queen, daughter of well-known Arsenal fan the Queen Mother (as revealed by Arseweb many years ago) was 'gutted' at being forced to
pull out of the official opening
of the new Arsenal
stadium at Ashburton Grove, due to a back injury. Her place
in the line-up was taken by reserve team player the
Duke of Edinburgh. I wasn't there but apparently he did
a decent job filling in (well, it's open isn't it?)
In order to make up for her missing the chance to meet the
Arsenal team, they agreed to meet her for tea the other day
at her place (see also BBC site for pictures). Amazingly, it's the first time a football team
has been invited to Buckingham Palace.
Amongst the players and staff gracing the sovereign with their
presence were Freddie Ljungberg, Theo Walcott, Justin Hoyte, Arsene Wenger
and Thierry Henry, who the Queen complimented on his 'very
international side'. Surely a subtle dig at the number of English players
at Arsenal?
There's no record I can find of what kind of cake they had.
I bet it was one of those tacky and disgusting Arsenal sponge
cakes you can get in Tescos.
The Queen is expected to be back in full training in 2-3 weeks.
