Arsenal (1) 2 - 2 (0) Bayern Munich
Highbury, Tuesday 5th December 2000
UEFA Champs League, stage 2 match 2
It took a few minutes after leaving the ground before
it registered that we'd got a point. It felt so like a loss.
Admittedly, Arsenal's 2 goals, early in each half, both
came against the run of play. But we'd dominated the first
half and were worthy match leaders at the time. Henry slotted the first home from close range after 3 minutes, following a fast and skilful move starting with Vieira feeding Pires on the wing. His cross was dummied by Henry on the edge of the box for Kanu,
who squared it unselfishly back to the Frenchman.
Kanu himself got the second, another cool finish to a
superb move, this time Henry turned supplier after being
set clear by a quick free-kick from Vieira. Kanu received
the ball on the corner of the D and passed it in off the far post.
Within a minute, sloppy defending allowed Tarnat to
latch onto a long Effenberg free-kick, lofted into the box and
inexplicably lost by our defence. He blasted home at the near post giving the unsighted Manninger no chance.
From that moment on Arsenal were panicking, and it was no surprise when Bayern equalised with a superb Scholl free-kick which Manninger stood and watched.
We came back into it towards the end, but a goal at the other end was just as likely.
In the other match in the group, Lyon scored an emphatic 3-0 home win over Spartak Moscow. Which is something at least. Seems our
best hope may be that the points in this group get shared more evenly than we'd been expecting. Just got to start winning a few of those points.
