Olympique Lyonnais (0) 0 - 1 (0) Arsenal
Lyon, Tuesday 13th February 2001
UEFA Champions League, stage 2, match 3
Another 1-0, another goal from Henry, great defence, Seaman making superb saves, 6th clean sheet
in a row. Hmmm, this feels like Arsenal again.
It was a great defensive display, at times it had to be. Adams
will have sent Sven Goran Ericsson's assistant home with the news
that his retirement from international football is going to hurt england, and Seaman's display must have forced him back to the top of the England reckoning. I lost count of the number of diving fingertip saves he made, and then there was a double
save where he had to recover from the ground to smother a close-range drive, and one where he was stranded in the middle of his box as the striker lifted it past him, but somehow he got just enough of a glove on the ball to deflect it wide.
We were perhaps fortunate that Cole's handball in the box
wasn't seen in the first half. He raised his arm as he went to block a cross.
At the other end, Henry grazed the outside of the post with a
cracking volley, after Kanu had set him up, taking the pass from Henry and raising his boot in
the air to hook the ball on for Thierry's continued run.
And Kanu went close after one of those runs where the ball sticks to his foot as he runs through 3 defenders into the box. He lifted the ball just wide of the far post.
The goal came after 58 minutes, when Cole did brilliantly to get a
pinpoint cross over for Henry to nod home.
This win, together with Bayern's over Spartak tonight,
makes qualification for the last 8 look realistic
again. The same set of results in the next matches
will do us fine. See champs league page for table.
