The bad news is once again in the centre of defence.
Adams and Grimandi are both out, Gilles with the calf strain which forced him off early against Bolton at the weekend,
and Tone with his old foot thing and a groin strain. They join
Sol Campbell on the sidelines. Sol has resumed light training
and has a small chance of making Saturday's match at Derby.
So, Matthew Upson partners Martin Keown in the middle. This is
a chance to prove himself which most of us doubted Matty would get this season (not because he's not up to it but because
there are several ahead of him).
Better news on the flanks where Cole returns from his one-match Euro ban, and Lauren has survived an injury scare - comign through
full training yesterday with no reaction from a suspected knee
injury. Luzhny had an awful game on Saturday, it's hard to believe that a regular Ukraine international could ever have such a bad game again. Still, his confidence will be at a low ebb
and Wenger may prefer Stepanovs on the bench as cover. He's
not as adaptable as the Moose (that's assuming one still thinks of
Oleg as a right-back) but perhaps Parlour could cover that position if required.
In midfield and up front, all that's certain is that Dennis
won't play. Having been rested at the weekend (and having both
had excellent starts to the season), we expect Pires and
Ljungberg to start.
Panathinaikos have a few injury worries. Defender Giorgios Seitaridis is almost certainly out after a training-ground knee injury. Midfielder Giorgios Karagounis had to have stitches in his jaw at the weekend but is thought to have a good chance.
And their record signing, striker Michael Konstantinou,
is also doubtful after a head collision in Sunday's game left him
needed stitches in his forehead.
