UEFA Champs League, group stage match 3

Ok, this is a bit late and we all probably know what happened. So forget reports for now. Let's put a couple of myths to bed instead.

First, Arsenal's dismal showing in Europe so far this year is not a huge surprise. Not to anyone who's been paying attention for the last few seasons. Yes, we've been pretty awesome domestically. But in the Champions League Arsenal have been a different team. Unconfident, uncertain, nervous. Very little of the swagger the manager demands or the determination the fans demand. So let's not pretend to be surprised.

Personally, I think it's the format. We're great in the league and great in the cups, but this mini-league format is confusing, in as much as it's not so clear what is required from each match. Note that our most successful year in Europe of late was the one where we went out of the CL early and transferred to the UEFA Cup.

That's the reason why most Arsenal fans were pleased with this year's format change. Going to a straight knockout earlier would suit us - if we got through. And it's also the reason we have a vestige of hope for this year. Because we are now in a clear must-win situation. 3 wins guarantees us passage (we think - please don't send in your calculations though, it's not worth worrying about just yet!). Anything less and we are out.

But we have to accept that now, getting into the UEFA cup may be a more realistic target.

The second myth is that there is anything surprising about the Lehmann cock-up, or that it detracts from his standing in the eyes of Arsenal fans.

We've all seen him coming out of his area so much this season, that a slip-up of this sort was inevitable. He came to us with a reputation for this stuff. We have to accept that this is his style, and so long as he's our number 1, there are going to be times like this. Maybe not many, let's hope, and let's hope not many are as crucial as this one. But in one sense, David Seaman's replacement is less David Seaman than Bruce Grobelaar.

I'm not saying it's right. I'm not saying I wouldn't prefer to have a keeper that was as good as Lehmann but didn't take so many risks. But he's what we've got and we shouldn't be surprised. Our defenders pass the ball out of defence in a risky way that would have horrified us 10 years ago, so why not the keeper?

So anyway, to the match. Pires hit the woodwork from a Henry header on 8 minutes (but most of the set pieces were as dire as usual). Dynamo striker Shatskikh forced a terrific save from Lehmann a minute later. Lauren forged a good chance with a fantastic run down the right, exchanging passes with Henry and Pires as he made his way across the edge of the box and into it, but running out of space at the end and havign his shot blocked.

On 27 they took the lead, slightly against the run of play. We'd been looking good on the whole, but dodgy at the back where quite a few clearances had been knocked straight up in the air instead of upfield. That happened again (Toure maybe), Edu (I think) was ineffective in midfield, and then a shot took a kind ricochet and popped up nicely for Shatskikh to volley home.

As per usual, Arsenal looked rattled. We did continue to threaten on the break, but looked more likely to concede agin than to equalise.

Arsenal came out with a bit more spirit after the break. Vieira, who hadn't been risked from the start, came on for Edu just after the hour. But before he had a chance to influence things, they got their second. Lehmann came out of his box to clear a through ball on their break (with Arsenal pressing forward looking for the equaliser). he may have miskicked but it appeared that maybe he was trying to place a pass rather than just hoof it as he probably should have done. It went straight to a midfielder (Belkevich) who should have done better than hit his 45 yard shot straight at Lehmann. The keeper, well out of his box, took the ball on his chest but failed to take any pace off it and it bounced away from him towards Shatskikh. Lehmann did his best to get there first, but had to stretch to do so and didn't get a strong enough touch on it. It came to Belkevich and this time he made no mistake.

To be fair, Arsenal picked themselves up again. On came Ljungberg and then Kanu. Henry got a goal 11 minutes from the end when Pires's pass found him clear in the box. Everything was pushed forward and Dynamo had a couple of great chances as a result. In the dying seconds a Henry shot was spilled (with Lehmann in attack, too) and Toure hacked his shot against the bar from 6 yards out.

We didn't deserve to lose this game. It was actually our best away performance for some time (especially if you don't count that freak result in Rome). But what goes around comes around. Let's not forget how lucky we were to get 10 points out of those last 4 league games.
