 Arsenal take scratch side to Panathinaikos by Rupe

Arsenal team news for the game in Greece tonight is basically as stated yesterday. Vieira misses the game with the twisted ankle suffered on Saturday (and is now said to be 80% unlikely to play at Old Trafford on Sunday - it's possible that the reports yesterday that he was had an 80% chance of playing were due to misunderstanding), Gilberto is out with his back, and Dennis has stayed in England.

But Freddie Ljungberg is back fit, so barring further mishaps the team pretty much picks itself:

Lehmann; Lauren, Campbell, Toure, Cole;
Ljungberg, Edu, Cesc, Pires;
Henry, Reyes

There are a couple of other injuries that affect the subs bench: Clichy is out with a dodgy ankle and Almunia with a shin problem. So Stuart Taylor will be on the bench along with Pascal Cygan and I guess maybe Phillipe Senderos, Pennant, van Persie and Flamini. Justin Hoyte is back from injury, making his comeback for the reserves last night. Lupoli, Quincy and Ryan Smith also played so it looks like van Persie will be the only attacking option on the bench in Greece.

Henry will be captain tonight. A few people have emailed Arseweb assuming that Sol Campbell will be captain, but it's not something he's ever seemed keen on. I'm not quite sure why people expect him to be captaincy material but we should all be used to the idea that he isn't by now. Perhaps it's because people see him as the new Tony Adams, personally I can see Ashley Cole getting the armband before Campbell does. Anyway, it seems that we shouldn't expect an Adams-style captain under Wenger, both Vieira and Bergkamp lead by example rather than by verbals.

Panathinaikos have a few absentees: Lucian Sanmartean (knee), Srdan Andric (broken leg), strikers Dimitris Papadopoulos (thigh) and Emmanuel Olisadebe (long term injury), and left back Marcus Munch (back).

Arsenal have won 5 and lost 1 of their 6 meetings with the Greek side, the loss coming during the last pair of encounters in the 2001 Champs League when each side won their home game, and Panathinaikos ended up winning the group. They have 5 players left from that campaign including their main goal threats Michalis Konstantinou. Another one to look out for is Ezequil Gonzales who has scored both their goals so far in this campaign. Only 1 of tonight's side played for Greece in Portugal in the summer, Angelos Bassinas (who also played against us in 2001, as well aas back in 1998). Dimitrios Papadopoulos was also in the victorious Greek side but is injured. They have a couple more internationals in keeper Chalkias and defender Goumas, but they didn't get to play in Portugal.

Pana's only loss so far this season was the 1-0 defeat at PSV in the last round. They beat Rosenborg at home in Europe before that, and are top of the Greek league with 3 wins and one draw.
