PSV Eindhoven (1) 1 - 1 (1) Arsenal
Philips Stadium, Eindhoven, Wednesday 24th November 2004
UEFA Champs League, group stage, match 5
Arsenal:
              Lehmann
     Lauren Campbell Toure Cole
Ljungberg Vieira Cesc Pires (Hoyte 69)
Henry Reyes (van Persie 62 (Flamini 81))
A game of many phases. A dodgy start including an early goal against. A good response culminating in a classy equaliser. Arsenal taking control only to be pegged back by one dumb sending off and one unlucky one. Ending with a backs-against-the-wall performance of 9 men, defending well and gaining the point needed to keep our destiny in our own hands.

In the first minute, Ljungberg's good running put pressure on the PSV keeper, but sadly he wasn't able to emulate Gilberto (it was against PSV that the Brazilian scored the fastest champs league goal ever).

Then Sibon took a free-kick from long-range which was deflected off the wall for a corner. Cesc played a nice ball over the top for Henry to run onto and he got it to Pires with a neat back-heel, but Bobby was too casual with his cross and it was intercepted. A minutes later Henry came close with a very difficult first-time half-volley from the middle of the box, as the ball dropped onto his foot from behind - it went a yard or so wide.

On 7 PSV crossed into our box diagonally from their right. Sibon climbed well to knock a header down to Farfan just outside the box. He hit his first time shot well and went for a corner off of Lauren. PSV had clearly worked on the corner. They took advantage of Arsenal's zonal marking by starting with 5 players grouped at the edge of the box. As van Bommel took it they all made carefully orchestrated runs towards goal. The key man, Ooijer, made his towards the near post. No-one followed him and Henry who was in that zone didn't react as Ooijer came from behind him, to get a free header on it and score.

Slowly Arsenal started to dominate, but there were a lot of loose final balls. Henry's chip on 18 was too strong for Freddie. Then Pires looked strong bringing the ball infield from the left, but then played a tame nothingy kind of ball that was deflected through safely for the keeper.

On 22 Henry chased a long through ball, and a defender, towards the goal line on the left. The defender tried to let it go out for a goal kick but Henry wrapped a leg round to keep it in. He brought it infield a bit to create an angle for himself but then shot softly wide of the near post.

While Henry was off for attention to an ankle (he'd taken a knock very early in the game), a promising break ended with a loose ball from Reyes out to the right. Lauren was there but Reyes should have seen the defender in position to intercept.

On the half hour we scored a terrifc equaliser. It started with a strong run forward by Toure. Henry got the ball on the right touch line and came inside skipping past a defender, before slipping it forward for Freddie who made a left-to-right run into the box ahead of him. Freddie back-heeled it into the path of Henry's continuing run, and Henry made no mistake with a low shot.

On 40 Farfan showed great control and turned to make space for a shot which was charged down superbly by Campbell. Moments later anothger good turn from Farfan beat Toure and got him into the box, but Kolo recovered well to get back and make a crucial tackle.

Lauren got booked early in the second half for showing an imaginary yellow card. Such bookings don't happen much but I think most of us think they should happen more often, and would prefer not to see Arsenal players risking it.

But Arsenal started the second half on top still. Campbell snuck into the box to lunge at a free kick, he managed to just get a touch but could only poke it at the keeper. He appeared to have been tugged back as he entered the box.

Van Bommel went on a terrific run down their left, and forced a decent save from Lehmann at the near post. Then, on the hour, van Persie came on for Reyes who had been unusually anonymous.

A few minutes later, Lauren got himself booked again, and sent off, for a high tackle from behind. Not malicious in any way but certainly ill-judged given the rules.

Straight away we broke with Henry down the left wing. He cut inside and tried a low shot inside the far post. But the keeper just managed to get a hand on it to direct it past the far post.

Van Persie had a very good chance when put clear on goal by Vieira. From a central position near the edge of the box, with the keeper coming out, he was perhaps trying to be too clever with his chip, and hit it far too strong when any kind of drive was likely to score.

Then, a few minutes after the sending off, Wenger decided to re-shape things by bringing Justin Hoyte on to play at right back. Pires was sacrificed. We had a couple of chances, both of them goign through Cesc, the second of which was the best as it finished with a Ljungberg volley straight at the keeper. Then PSV had a rare but better chance when van Bommel's high cross was headed on by Sibon and nearly turned in by Alex's stretch at the far post.

On 77, Vieira got shown a second yellow for a sliding tackle. It looked like he got the ball, and he hadn't been called up for many fouls, so it has to be seen as a bit unlucky. A couple fo minutes later van Persie and Sibon clashed nastily when both went in high for the ball. The Arsenal player, a sub himself, had to go off but it was probably timely as Flamini is more of a defensive player and with 9 men Arsenal's ambitions had to be pegged back a bit.

We were on the defensive for the rest of the match but managed to hold out. Alex headed wide when left unmarked at the far post from a corner. Then Lehmann got a hand on a cross from the left and got lucky when the ricochet hit Campbell and fell where Lehmann could pounce on it. Moments later, as injury time started, Park's cross/shot was deflected off Campbell and Lehmann had to tip it round the far post - nearly into the path of Alex.

Arsenal stay second in the table thanks to a draw also in Norway. A win at home to Rosenborg will be enough to ensure progression, and any result will be enough so long as Panathinaikos fail to win at home to PSV. If they do beat PSV, and we draw nil-nil, we'll be going out despite having beaten each of the othrr 3 teams on the head-to-head results.
