Arsenal draw Bayern Munich in knockout stage by Rupe
on 17/12/04 at 12:59
this is story 323 of 365 in this topic to date
Arsenal have been drawn against Bayern Munich in the first knockout stage of this year's Champions League. The first match, at the Olympis Stadium in Munich, will be on Tuesday the 22nd of February, and the return leg at Highbury will be 2 weeks later on Wednesday March 9th.

The draw is full of interesting ties, especially for the English clubs. Man Utd have been drawn against AC Milan, and Chelsea have Barcelona. Liverpool have on paper the best tie of the 4, against Bayer Leverkusen.

Arsenal have only played Bayern once before, in the 200/01 Champiuons League, when we got a disappointing draw at home followed by a 1-0 loss in Munich but scraped through in second place behind them before going out to Valencia in the last 8. Bayern went on to win it.

See our Arsenal vs Bayern page for information about our opponents. The obvious and most interesting clash that this throws up is between Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmann. Whether Jens manages to reinstall himself as Arsenal keeper in time for the ties or not, you can be sure there's going to be some winding-up coming from the German camp. Other names you'll know from the Bayern squad include Owen Hargreaves, Mehmet Scholl, Michael Ballack, and Roy Makaay.

Full draw:

Real Madrid v Juventus
FC Porto v Inter Milan
Barcelona v Chelsea
Werder Bremen v Lyon
Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen
PSV v Monaco
Man Utd v AC Milan
Bayern Munich v Arsenal
