Sol Campbell is set to start the second leg of the Champs League semi-final against Villarreal tomoreow
night.
Arsene Wenger revealed
today that the injury that forced Philippe Senderos to limp out of the
draw with Tottenham on
Saturday, will also keep him out of tomorrow's game. This gives Sol a chance to try to
re-establish himself in Wenger's thinking as a first-choice centre-back, despite
Senderos and Kolo Toure having been part a crucial and ever-present part of our current record-breaking
Champs League defence.
Sol's last game was the disappointing one-all draw
against Portsmouth 2 weeks ago when he played alright, but suffered a broken nose (as well
as a badly cut eyebrow). Wenger admits that it's a bit of a gamble seeing as Sol's not played a lot recently. But he
looked fit enough at Pompey, and the operation that he's had on his nose shouldn't have prevented him
from training too much. Before the Portsmouth game, Sol hadn't played since the West Ham debacle at the start of February. His ability to bounce back from this season's setbacks could now prove the key to the rest of our season, as it's thought that Big Phil could be out for 3 weeks.
Johan Djourou will be on the bench as cover for right back as well as centre back,
and at left back Gael Clichy also returns to the squad, although he won't be
used from the start. Even if Clichy had been thought to be match fit (he hasn't played for the first team since suffering a stress fracture of his foot back in November), there's a good chance that
Mathieu Flamini's superb recent displays would have kept him in the side.
We'll have a full preview later. But in brief: Arsenal have no other new injury problems. But
Alexander Hleb and Freddie Ljungberg return as midfield options, but
Ashley Cole is not sufficiently match fit to come back in.
